Pupils from six Cumbrian schools joined forces with peers from Newcastle to stage two concerts this week.

Dearham Primary School played host to children from their partner school Northside in Workington, along with Aspatria’s Richmond Hill, Broughton, Braithwaite, Threlkeld and Newcastle’s Westerhope Primary School to form a joint choir.

Led by Dearham and Northside, the project aimed to promote collaboration beyond geographical boundaries and encourage the children to work and make friends with peers from different schools.

About 150 children took to the stage to sing numbers ranging from Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah to Bruno Mars’ Count On Me to about 250 family and friends each night.

Sam Kidd, headteacher at Dearham and Northside, said: “As well as developing their musical skills I think the thing the children got most out of it was meeting friends from different schools.

“They started the rehearsals really quiet and not knowing each other and after a couple of songs and a couple of playtimes together they made some good friends.

“It’s a meaningful way of making links with other schools.”

The youngsters spent three months preparing for the concerts.

The schools are already drawing up plans to repeat the project next year and hope to make links with a school from Liverpool to add to their numbers.
