Children at a Workington school have knitted more than 600 little hats for charity.

Pupils at St Joseph's School did their bit for The Big Knit, a campaign run by Age UK and Innocent drinks, raising the equivalent of £150.

Every time Innocent sells a bottle of drink topped with a little hat, 25p goes to the charity.

Catherine Keevil, learning resource centre manager at the school, said it was a real community project, with parents, family friends and staff also taking joining in to help and donating wool.

She added: "We always aim to fundraise each year for different types of groups. It's part of the school's Christian ethos.

"It's nice to do something locally and it's about teaching the children it's nice to help other people."
She added that it followed the principles promoted by the school's motto, "Living, loving and learning through Christ".

Pupils learned to knit thanks to lunchtime drop-ins held by one of the teachers.

The project started in April and Miss Keevil said she expected more hats to be made in the coming weeks, with many students also knitting them at home.
