A group of West Cumbrian students have raised over £900 for charity.

Sixth formers at Workington Academy raised £907 for Hospice at Home West Cumbria as part of the charity's 30 for 30 challenge.

The project, marking the charity's 30th anniversary, saw them given £30 to use to raise as much money as they could.

Students were mentored by Kaefer and PPM Ltd and helped by specialists from Balfour Beatty and Robinson and Co, who supported them to developing their ideas into fundraising opportunities.

These included a raffle, a car wash, a cake sale, as well as a five-a-side competition and basketball game with students versus staff.

Katie Harper, business connector for Business In the Community, who co-ordinated the initiative, said: "The students have been very innovative, and explored different options and adapted their plans when they met challenges.

"As well as raising money for a fantastic local cause, the students have had the opportunity to develop awareness and skills that will help them in interview situations in the future."

Marks & Spencer, Wilkinson's, Cherry Tree Fashions, Solway Salon Supplies, Tongnarelli's and Cumbria Newspapers provided prizes for the raffle.

The £30 for 30 challenge was sponsored by Sealy UK.
