Pupils at a Workington school have created a time capsule for future for children of the future.

Members of the student council at Workington Academy have buried a time capsule in the foundations of the new school, which is currently being built.

Jack Earl, 18, head boy of the student council, said: "It will be quite historic, it's exciting and I hope that one of my grandchildren can see it. I think it will be very different then, but I hope not too much because I like it how things are now."

Heather Gibbon, 13, said: "It's a good opportunity, my name will be there forever. I think the children will be excited and surprised especially if things will change a lot. It would be a good opportunity for them to see how things worked in the past."

In the time capsule, students chose to include ties from the current academy, and the former Southfield and Stainburn schools, this week's top 40 music chart, pictures of Workington, letters from pupils, the periodic table of elements, magazines and newspapers.

Jonathan Logan, headteacher, said: "It's a very exciting time for the academy, it's a once in a lifetime experience for the students and they have taken it very seriously.

"This is another step for the school towards moving into the new building in January."
