A Workington school held a fundraising drive to buy a box of materials which will be sent to people left homeless by natural disaster and conflict.

St Joseph's School raised money to buy the kit from the charity ShelterBox, which works with Rotary.

Each box costs £590 and they contain groundmats, thermal blankets, family tents, cooking equipment, lights, straws to make contaminated water safe to drink, mosquito nets, tool kits, activity packs for children and water containers.

The school raised money through a concert and a non-uniform day.

Val Hetherington, head of music, said: "It fits in with the school's Catholic ethos and it's helping families.

"Refugees throughout the world have been in the news this year and we feel that it's an appropriate thing for us to do.

"You know that it's helping families and that it's going directly to a family."

The aim of ShelterBox is to help provide shelter for people living in areas affected by disaster and conflict.
