Students at St Joseph's School in Workington rubbed shoulders with professionals from different walks of life as part of their enterprise week.

The school runs the initiative each year as part of Global Enterprise Week and arranges speakers and activities.

Students attended talks before school and at lunchtime to get an insight into the kinds of careers on offer.

They have also taken part in activities during form time to raise awareness of careers and inspire them to be entrepreneurial.

Cybil Worsley, business manager, said: "It's about their futures, being enterprising and using different skills in the workplace.

"Most talks have had 25 students in and they've responded very well."

Students have met people from the performing arts, the police, Workington Leisure Centre and the engineering, legal and construction industries.

Sam Duxbury, of Thomas Armstrong, spoke to pupils about the construction industry.

He said: "It's very important to get them thinking about careers especially in the construction industry where there's a shortage of skilled workers."

Year 10 pupil Riley Higby, 14, said: "I'm hoping to learn about different trades and how to achieve in those trades.

"It's very useful. It shows me how much effort I need to put in to achieve what I want."
