A Cockermouth primary school has created a light, bright and spacious early years learning unit.
Fairfield Primary School, on Sullart Street, used to have its reception and nursery classes in different buildings.
It has now merged them, using what used to be the key stage one hall, so that youngsters can work alongside each other and have access to their own outside space.
Headteacher Andrea Pattinson said: "Provision for the early years has been extended to cover the whole of the lower floor in one of our three school buildings, with access to the outdoor classroom also.
"This is an exciting opportunity to continue to fully implement our long-term vision for early years ahead of planned timescales."
The outside classroom includes a climbing frame, water, sand and a chalk board.
Reception teacher Katy Mitchell said: "It's a great learning area.
"The new unit is great, it gives the children a chance to work together across all age groups. They are really enjoying it, as are the staff."
The hall used to house the after-school club, which is now based elsewhere. The area has been converted into various different areas for the youngsters to learn and play in.
A school spokesman said: "They work in different groups: the Helpful Hamsters, Kind Kittens and Friendly Frogs, and love all the different things on offer."
The new unit was opened by former chair of governors Dot Yoxall.
Fairfield Primary School has nearly 400 pupils, with 175 youngsters in key stage one.
