A new councillor has been elected to serve Workington's Moss Bay ward following the death earlier this year of Bill Bacon, deputy mayor of Allerdale.

The seat was held for the Labour party at the polls last Thursday by Frank Johnston, who took 411 votes beating Ukip candidate Bib Hardon into second place with 189 votes.

Conservative candidate Louise Mary Donnelly picked up 33 votes.

A by-election the same day for the Dalton ward, the seat was taken from the Conservatives by Independent Marion Cynthia Fitzgerald, who got 133 votes.

Conservative candidate Mike Johnson came third with 93 votes behind Labour's Ross Lucas Hayman, husband of Workington MP Sue Hayman, who took 118 votes.

Eric William Atkinson, who stood for Ukip, picked up 53 votes ahead of Flic Crowley, of the Green Party, who took 22.

The Dalton seat was left vacant after Conservative Colin Sharpe stepped down earlier this year, nine months after being elected.
