Ten infant and junior schools from the Cockermouth area will take part in a two-day sports tournament to celebrate the Olympic Games.

About 1,500 pupils from Broughton School, All Saints Primary School, Fairfield infants and juniors, Bridekirk Dovenby, Eaglesfield Paddle Academy, St Bridget’s primary, Lorton primary, Dean primary and St Joseph’s primary, will take part in the event on Tuesday, July 10, from noon to 3.15pm, and Wednesday, July 11, from 9.30am to noon and 12.30pm to 3.15pm.

The Cockermouth Olympic Games will be split into three sections, with key stage one students competing on Tuesday, year five and six students competing on Wednesday morning, and year three and four pupils competing on Wednesday afternoon at Fairfield Junior School.

Schools will be mixed into teams representing 10 different countries. Each group will carry a flag at the start of the event to mimic the Olympics opening ceremony.

They will take part in events such as long jump, javelin, a marathon and sprint races.

Chris Wright, sports coach at Wright’s Sport Services which is running the event, said: “Cockermouth school headteachers at their consortium meeting decided that they wanted the children to be involved in an event where they would experience Olympic values.

“The two days will also give them the chance to mix with other children from different schools.

“They approached me and asked me to organise the event because of my experience running Cumbria School Olympics last year.”
