Firm steps in to help Scouts on centenary trip to the USA

A WORKINGTON business has helped town scouts raise money for a trip to America.

Iggesund Paperboard, of Siddick, has donated £500 towards the trip, which will cost £10,000.

Five scouts from the 11th Harrington Scouts will travel to America to take part in an annual camp at Lake Michigan in July.

There they will spend a week with an American family and a week camping.

Joseph Fryer, 14, of Leeches Terrace, Flimby, is one of the scouts going on the trip.

He said: “This is a great opportunity and something that you don’t do every day.

“We are all looking forward to going to America this summer and meeting up with other scouts.

“This year is special because its the 100th year of scouting.”

During their time in America, the scout groups from all over the world will put on a performance to show things local to their area.

Niall Topping, 15, from Harrington, said: “It should be good fun. We will be able to show other scout troops from around the world what we do here in West Cumbria.

“We will be telling them about gurning and the World’s Biggest Liar competition.”

A spokesman for Iggesund said: “We are pleased to be able to support the local scouts in their efforts to attend the Michigan camp.

“We recognise the excellent work of the Scout movement locally and the camaraderie and development opportunities it affords to its members. We hope our contribution can help them to reach their target.”

So far the Harrington scouts have raised £2,000.
