800-name petition demands halt to speeding

A WORKINGTON man has collected an 800-name petition to stop people speeding on side streets.
William Blair, 41, of Cumberland Street, said roads in the St Michael’s ward area, towards the train station, were notorious for people speeding.
“We get people coming down the street at what seems like 100 miles an hour,” he said.
Mr Blair, who works at Tesco, said he was so sick of the situation that he decided to get up a petition calling for steps to be taken to slow motorists down.
“I’ve never done anything like it before and I wasn’t even sure what to do,” he said.
But within a relatively short time, he had 800 signatures.
Mr Blair said he was concerned that there would be a serious or fatal accident.
Mr Blair has presented the petition to county councillor Alan Barry.
Mr Barry said the situation on Cumberland, Senhouse and Bolton Streets could have been made worse by the fact that Station Road has been closed for work to begin on demolishing a row of houses.
He said he would investigate the problem and speak to the police about enforcement.
He said: “I will also take the matter to the county’s Allerdale local committee in June.
“If there is a problem we will do our best to help solve it.”
