Objects from 1899 which were found hidden in the wall of a youth club in Seaton have become the focal point of an exhibition to mark Local History Month.

Malcolm Harwood, 63, of Coronation Avenue, discovered a time capsule at the former reading room on Main Street when the walls were being re-plastered in 2009.

It contained objects including a copy of the West Cumberland Times, the predecessor of the Times & Star, and a poster advertising a concert on April 6, 1899.

It was put there to mark the laying of the reading room’s foundation stones.

Malcolm, a volunteer at Seaton Club for Young People, donated the objects to the library, where they are now displayed.

They are the centrepiece of an exhibition running at the library throughout this month.

Other items on display include a child’s dress from 1885 and a wedding dress from 1915, donated by Mary Johnson, the mother-in-law of library assistant-in-charge Teresa Johnson.

Teresa said: “The plan is to have the time capsule here permanently so that everyone in Seaton can come and view it. I hope people will come in and see the heritage of the village. They will see that there was a lot going on in Seaton in 1899.”
