60,000 speeders caught in Cockermouth

More than 60,000 vehicles have been caught speeding in Cockermouth’s 30mph zones over the last four months, new figures reveal.

Have your say

This is a lie
60000 motorists have not been caught speeding.
They have been recorded at driving at a speed that can not been virified due to the fact that these sighns are not calibrated to the accuracy required to provide a conviction.
FACT
Lets have the correct information please T&S

Here we go again, another headline to support the fact that the poor motorist is being fleeced of his cash.
Lets get one thing striaight, if speeding is a serious issue then put police there and police it.
This is another piece of propaganda that is aimed at creating a argument to make it acceptable to continue to price the motorist of the road.

Pippin - a child was once killed outside the school that is true. However, was a motorist prosecuted ... erm, No. This proves nothing except that occasionally terrible things happen. Every day on the roads 10 people in the UK are seriously injured or killed (average). The only way of ensuring this does not happen is to take all vehicles off the road. Back to reality please - we moan if the Police target the driver, yet we moan and demand action when vehicles are driven at speeds over an unrealistically low limit. I personally tended to drive at those silly illuminated, meaningless devices in order to satisfy my craving to see a down in the mouth face! I know I am not alone either. Time to get off the soap boxes really, and return to the question - how many of these vehicles exceeding the speed limit was involved in an accident? None .... oh, well that's not a problem realy then is it???

Ahhhh, so that's why that speed smiley face thingy kept popping up all over town!

@Pippin - I've only seen the police there once or twice, and they weren't doing speed checks!

I was told by a youngster in another area that these machines that record and display the speed of oncoming vehicles without taking any details of the registration numbers, are a challenge to see just how fast they can make the display. What we need is a method of actually catching the guilty speedsters out and dealing with them accordingly!

It's just as bad in the villages. Long over due for around town speeds to be brought down to 20mph and near schools, town centres and other high risk areas 15mph! Instant ban for 6 weeks for anyone caught doing 20mph or more over plus the fine. Lets then have the same for mobile phone usage - I'm sure an instant ban & the police keeping your car for 6 weeks (inc paying storage fees) would start to make people realise driving a car COMES with responsibility.

Speed is a problem everywhere. I asked Cumbria Police if we could have a speed indication device in our location for a bit. Dennis Kelly told me they do not provide the devices.
The police hide round corners in bus shelters and do not target problem areas at peak times, I don't think they have really thought about how to tackle the problem and only take any notice in areas where people shout the loudest.

The fact no accidents have happened perhaps suggests the speed limits should be increased then. Those of you who live on 30mph roads and gesticulate at drivers are just a laughing stock frankly. I've had a walking stick waved at me and I was doing 30 in a 30 zone. Did I lose sleep, only through laughing!

Yeoman. The police, by law, are permitted to exceed the speed limit if it is in the course of their duties at that time. They do not need to use siren or blue lights if using them defeats the purpose of their speeding.
Section 87 Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 applies

60,000 speeding vehicles or 60,000 cases of speeding vehicles? Slight difference...
Some people should stop worrying about what other people are doing and just get on with their lives. Do you always drive at or below the speed limits? I reckon not but I await the holier-than-thou "Of course I do, always" reply.
