Work to improve footpaths, cycleways, road markings and traffic signs on the A66 between Braithwaite and Portinscale has begun.
The work is expected to take up to four weeks and traffic lights are being used outside peak travel times.
Elsewhere, the dual carriageway at Bassenthwaite Lake has reopened after storm damage was repaired.
