Age UK will launch a new centre in Workington next week.

The Bradbury Independent Living Centre is in the former Michael Cunningham furniture and carpet shop on Oxford Street.

It replaces the St Michael’s Active Living Centre, which closed this week following the move to the bigger base.

The centre will provide information, advice and access to Age UK and partner services, daily living, mobility and dementia aids for purchase or on prescription, telecare products, Age UK Hearing, specialist footwear, continence products, and wheelchair hire from Cumbria Mobility.

Age UK has worked with other charities and councils to set it all up. It includes a community activity suite with adaptable furniture, computer facilities, a hearing loop, a small kitchen and a toilet.

An open day will be held on Tuesday for people to look around the centre and find out more about its services.

Tesco has donated raffle prizes and will present £500 to Age UK West Cumbria to support the work of the centre.

Mary Bradley, chief executive of Age UK West Cumbria said: “This is a very exciting day for us to finally be able to present this wonderful facility to our local community and see our vision of a comprehensive independent living centre for West Cumbria made a reality.

“Here people will be able to find everything they need to help them live independently and also take part in on-site training and activities.”

Rooms in the building will be available for hire.

The open day will run between 10pm and 4pm.
