An air ambulance was called to Workington after a 10-year-old girl was injured in a motocross accident.

The Great North Air Ambulance was scrambled at 11am on Saturday following the incident at Oldside.

The girl, who was believed to have arm and back pain, was assessed and treated by the air ambulance trauma team before being taken to the Cumberland Infirmary by road with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident happened on land near Northside speedway training track and Mike Bickley, who runs the facility with his family, said the girl was lucky his daughter-in-law Diane had been walking her dog in the area at the time.

Diane's husband Paul was able to unlock a barrier blocking access for an ambulance to reach the youngster.

Mike said: "You do get quite a few people down there, mostly during the summer.

"I think we've probably been lucky that there haven't been more serious accidents.

"If people really want to learn how to ride a bike, we provide a place where they can come and ride on the speedway track in a safe environment.

"We don't wish people to get hurt and motorbikes can be dangerous."
