It is the first day of Allonby's annual art exhibition today.

Now in its 36th year, it is known as Allonby Artex and is held in the village hall from today until Monday.

Janet Wilshaw, organiser and Allonby Village Hall management committee chairman,  said: “Artex prides itself on encouraging fresh ideas and input from younger artists as well as supporting our regular established artists.

"Every year it inspires lots of people to visit and enjoy a day out at the seaside.”

This year the exhibition expects 40 artists who will be exhibiting over 250 original works of art.

There will be a variety of mediums with an extensive range of subjects.

There are scenes inspired by Allonby and the Solway coast as well as views of the Lake District, plus abstracts, wildlife, insects and portraits.

Janet added: “Our regular contributors, some of whom travel from all parts of the county, continue to support the exhibition because it attracts so many visitors and collectors” .

This year will see the return of many regulars but also welcomes 14 new exhibitors.

Since the first exhibition in 1979, more than 7,000 paintings have been shown and it raises money for the running and restoration of the village hall.

It is estimated that over the years, the event has raised more £36,000.

Entry is £1 and refreshments will be available.

A raffle will also be held every day, with prizes including vouchers for meals, wine and chocolates from establishments in Allonby and a family pass for swimming at the village’s Spring Lea Pool and Leisure Centre.

It will be open from 4pm to 8pm today, 10am to 8pm Saturday and Sunday and 10am to 4pm on Monday.
