Maryport's replica Victorian street lamps have been installed.

Cumbria County Council has put up 11 LED lights on Senhouse Street.

County road lighting supervisor Brian Holmes said the last lamp was installed on Saturday.

He said: “This is one of the first areas to get LED lighting and is the first, as far as I know, to get the Victorian style.”

He said each post cost in excess of £700.

“But the use of LED lighting means we will save a huge amount in energy consumption.

"We trialled four of the lamps and when they seemed to work well we installed the other seven. They look in keeping with the street,” he added.

Town centre manager Toni Magean said he was delighted with the lights.

“They really look good and add to the buzz I feel in Maryport at the moment.

"There are new businesses opening. The Allerdale scheme to subsidise people wanting to renovate their building frontages has been oversubscribed.

“We have spent £50,000 on the streetscape scheme which was taken up by 59 businesses or town centre residences.

“We have another 25 on a waiting list and I’m hoping we may be able to get another £30,000 in the future. It is all helping Maryport to look good.”

Meanwhile, Mr Holmes said the county council is looking to improve lighting on Victory Crescent, starting next month.
