Members of a Cockermouth church rallied round to ensure one of their eldest parishioners enjoyed a wonderful 90th birthday.

Audrey Holmes, of Harrot Hill, has been a member of All Saints' Church, off Kirkgate, for more than 40 years.

When her son, Ian, who lives in Worcestershire, contacted team rector Godfrey Butland about organising a celebration at All Saints, Rev Butland said the church would be delighted to arrange something.

Parishioners worked together to create a delicious afternoon tea which was enjoyed by more than 60 people last Saturday.

And, unbeknown to Mrs Holmes, it had been arranged that Castlegate Singers, who she sang with for more than 10 years, would pop in.

"They all trooped in and started singing, it was a lovely surprise for Audrey," said Rev Butland.

"The whole thing went really well. Audrey is very well thought of, people love her and it was a great pleasure to do something for her."

More than four generations of Mrs Holmes' family were there to enjoy the festivities.

Ian said: "It was super. We are so grateful to all the people that helped out, my mother really enjoyed it all."
