Maryport's drains need to be cleaned before winter, town councillors said.

Members agreed to contact the county council's highways department and Connect Roads after the issue was raised at a town council meeting.

Councillor Angela Kendall said there were concerns during the Tour of Britain that cyclists would be racing through deep water at Netherhall Corner.

She said: "We had rain in the morning and the blocked drains were starting to overflow."

Mayor Linda Radcliffe said it was not just a Netherhall problem.

She said: "When the council held a community clean-up, we had first hand knowledge of how many drains are blocked.

"I think every culvert in Maryport is blocked with weeds."

Coun Carole Tindall suggested the problem stretched from Flimby to Netherhall School.

County and town councillor Carni McCarron-Holmes said she would investigate.
