A Royal Navy bomb disposal squad was called to Beckfoot after a military shell was found washed up on the beach.
Maryport Inshore Coastguard Rescue and police were alerted by a member of the public on Saturday morning and the unidentified shell was cordoned off.
The Royal Navy team carried out a controlled explosion at 1.30pm.
