Broughton Bridge has reopened to traffic.

The bridge was being resurfaced last month when workmen damaged a gas pipe.

The work to install a new, rerouted, gas pipe was due to finish last Friday.

The pipe was installed under the River Derwent.

Diversions have been in place for drivers travelling between the A66 and the villages of Great Broughton and Little Broughton with Broughton Bridge also being closed.

Resurfacing work was planned to be carried out yesterday.

The one-way restriction placed on the Little Broughton to Papcastle road during the bridge closure has now been lifted.

Ricky McMillan, site manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: "We've had to reroute the pipe to ensure the security of the gas supply to Broughton using specialist teams.

"We've worked closely with the Environment Agency and Cumbria Highways to make sure the work is completed in a safe and sustainable way with minimal impact on the immediate environment.

"We'd like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank everyone for bearing with us as we complete the work as quickly as possible."
