The path leading into St Columba's churchyard in Broughton Moor is set to be upgraded thanks to a grant from Cumbria County Council.
Roots from a nearby tree have made the path uneven, creating a health and safety hazard.
The parochial church council has received permission to remove the tree.
Councillor Keith Little has now provided £490 from his divisional allowance, provided to support causes in the Maryport South area, towards the work.
The money will fund removal of the tree, relaying of the path and installation of a handrail.
