A Cockermouth drama group will be staging a play by acclaimed Irish writer Connor McPherson next week.

Len Wainwright is directing Cockermouth Amateur Dramatic Society's latest production at the town's Kirkgate Centre.

The Weir is set in a remote pub in the West of Ireland one winter night. The characters tell stories to each other, initially these are chilling ghost stories but as the play progresses it becomes apparent that they are describing their own fears about loss and love.

Len said: "Sometimes the fears we talk about most are the things we fear least. Sometimes the hardest fear to face is the fear of being honest with ourselves?

"The play will initially draw the audience in with its air of mystery and fear but leave them at the end reflecting on the life-giving qualities of simple companionship and honesty."

The play runs from Thursday, March 30, to Saturday, April 1, 8pm. Tickets (£9) are available from the box office.
