Cycling star Mark Cavendish will be riding through West Cumbria next month after confirming he will compete in the Tour of Britain.

The former World Road Racing champion will lead a strong Etixx Quick Step team at the event.

He will be joined by three-time World Cyclo-Cross Champion Zdeněk Štybar.

Mark, a 26-time Tour de France stage winner, said: "I'm excited to ride the Tour of Britain. It's my home tour and it's always something special to ride in front of your national crowd.

"It's already my eighth time at the race and year-by-year I can see how cycling is growing in this nation.

"We are at the start to try to be successful as we were last year. We have a strong team and we are ready to race. This year the course is extremely difficult."

Stage three of the race will set off from Cockermouth on Tuesday, September 8.

In 2013, the last time the Aviva Tour of Britain was in Cumbria, it generated an estimated £4 million for the county’s economy.

Next month, after leaving Cockermouth, cyclists will sweep over to Maryport, then along the coast through Allonby to Silloth before cutting across to Carlisle.
