Revised illuminated signage plans for Cockermouth's new Lidl store should be refused again, say town councillors.

The company submitted plans to Allerdale Council earlier this year for signs for the WCF Pet and Equestrian Store and supermarket which it is going to build off Station Road.

It wanted to put in five fascia adverts, two hoarding adverts and a single poster advert.

The town council recommended refusal. Allerdale refused them, saying the amount, illumination and design would result in a "cumulative undesirable clutter of advertisements which would be out of character and detrimental to the general and visual amenity of the area".

The company has recently resubmitted revised plans, removing two of the billboard signs.

Cockermouth town councillor Isabel Burns said: "Can we ask for them to be less intrusive?"

Councillor Eric Nicholson said: "From day one I have been against internally illuminated signs in Cockermouth. I think we should continue this way."

The town council decided to recommend refusal and ask the company to install signs like their ones in Alnwick, which are smaller and not internally illuminated.

Construction work on the Station Road store was set to begin in April but was delayed.

A spokesman said this week: "We're hoping to break ground in the next month or so."

The firm began demolition of the former Fairfield Garage in January.

It plans to build a new unit for the existing WCF store on the former garage site, then demolish its original building to make way for the supermarket.
