A new flood defence wall has been unveiled at Cockermouth Cricket Club.

It is called the Rotary Wall in recognition of the generous donations from the town club towards repair work on the pitch and clubhouse.

Around 60 members of the town’s Rotary club and Inner Wheel enjoyed a social gathering on Sunday at the cricket club.

John Grainger, director of Cumbria Cricket and member of Cockermouth Cricket Club, said: “It is great to welcome members of Rotary and Inner Wheel to the cricket club to celebrate the unveiling of the Rotary Wall.

“This will help to give some protection to the cricket field which has now been devastated twice in the last five years.

“It is also an opportunity to thank those within both organisations who played such a prominent leadership role along with the Churches of Cockermouth working together to give comfort and practical support to those individuals and families that endured suffering as a result of the devastation from flood.

“The cricket club is an important community facility and Cockermouth School also played a part in ensuring that our junior players could practise ahead of the start of the season.

“Looking around the club today it is clear that the effort put in has been well rewarded by the current excellent state of the ground.”

New Rotarian Richard Bennett, former head of music at Cockermouth School, provided musical accompaniment and a quiz.
