The Prime Minister has been challenged over the need to invest in Cumbria's infrastructure.

Carlisle MP John Stevenson quizzed Theresa May during Prime Minister's Questions.

He highlighted the recent visits to the county by both the PM and other senior cabinet members in recent months.

"They saw for themselves not only its beauty, but its industrial strengths and its potential," Mr Stevenson said.

"If the Government's industrial strategy is to succeed, places such as Cumbria need to be part of that success."

Mr Stevenson asked Mrs May to "ensure that Cumbria gets the infrastructure investment which it requires to make sure that it really does fulfill its potential".

Mrs May responded: "I and other ministerial colleagues were delighted to be able to take the opportunity to visit the beautiful county of Cumbria of Cumbria - and we are even happier now Cumbria has another strong voice in the form of the new Conservative MP for Copeland."

She continued: "But [Mr Stevenson] is right that Cumbria and the north west has huge industrial potential. That is why we are getting on and delivering our investment plans across the country, including the north west."

Mrs May highlighted the £556m allocated from the local roads fund to boost local productivity, and the £147m being invested to tackle congestion and improve local infrastructure.

She added: "But it is our plan for Britain that is going to deliver that stronger, fairer economy and is going to deliver those higher paid, higher skilled jobs for people across the country."
