Cycling legend Sir Bradley Wiggins has confirmed he will be racing in the Tour of Britain next month.

The Tour de France and Tour of Britain winner will be taking part with five other cyclists in Team Wiggins.

It is the eight time the Olympian gold medallist has taken part in the tour, which he won in 2013.

It is hoped his presence will draw even more spectators to the roadside and help boost tourism in Cumbria.

Teams Sky and Etixx Quick-Step, which include Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish respectively, are also taking part in the tour but it has not yet been confirmed whether the famous cyclists will be riding.

Stage three of the race sets off from Cockermouth on Tuesday, September 8.

In 2013, the last time the Aviva Tour of Britain was in Cumbria, it generated an estimated £4 million for the county’s economy.

Next month, after leaving Cockermouth, cyclists will sweep over to Maryport, then along the coast to Silloth before cutting across to Carlisle.
