Comedian and TV star Dave Spikey will have Workington rolling in the aisles in April.

Best known as Phoenix Nights' legendary compere without compare Jerry St Clair, the comic will be at the town's Carnegie Theatre on April 7 with his new show Punchlines.

The multi award-winner is one of the most sought-after comic talents in the UK.

With a career spanning more than two decades, Dave has numerous TV appearances under his belt as a stand-up comedian, presenter and actor – and behind the screens as an acclaimed comedy writer.

The show asks the question: can a joke or funny story still make you laugh like a drain when you have been given the punchline beforehand?

Dave believes so and in Punchlines he will present strong evidence to support this and in so doing, he will land blow after blow on the funny bone, turning life’s events into comedy gold and ensuring audiences everywhere have their ribs not just tickled but thoroughly pummelled.

Dave began his comedy journey almost 25 years ago, pounding the comedy club circuit and supporting the likes of Jack Dee, Max Boyce and Eddie Izzard.

In 1996, Dave met Peter Kay and they went on to form a formidable partnership, collaborating on projects, including the critically acclaimed Phoenix Nights.

After starring in and writing comedy drama Magnolia for BBC1 and Dead Man Weds for ITV1, the former bio-medical scientist became a regular alongside Jimmy Carr on Channel 4 panel show, 8 Out of 10 Cats, and also presented the revival of quiz show Bullseye.

Earlier this spring, Dave was part of the Phoenix Nights reunion shows that packed out the Manchester Arena for 15 nights and raised more than £5m for Comic Relief.

His appearance at the Carnegie is another comedy coup for the Finkle Street theatre, which has seen appearances from comedians including Sean Lock and Roy Chubby Brown.

It is a deliberate effort by the venue’s management to appeal to promoters representing nationally recognised acts.

Tickets for Dave Spikey's Punchlines are £16.
