Celebrations are taking place in Distington this weekend to mark the 130th anniversary of the village church.

A flowers festival is being held in recognition of the Church of the Holy Spirit’s milestone birthday.

It will be held at the church on Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 5pm.

And music events are also being held there and at Distington Community School hall. Different groups will be providing flower displays.

The Rev Heather Lowe, of Church of the Holy Spirit, said: “It’s quite a big event for the village. There are a lot of people who have put a lot of time and effort into organising this event.”

There will be an exhibition of weddings and christening photos in the school hall. Free activities will be held for youngsters at the school hall.

Festival activities include: Church of the Holy Spirit, Saturday: 10am opening service and 2-3pm singing by Kids and Co. Distington Community School hall, Saturday: 11am, Rick Welsby folk singing; 12pm Ragtime with Chris Lamb; 2.30pm Keith Greggain playing guitar. Church of the Holy Spirit, Sunday: 10am Chris Lamb performing; 3pm Keith Greggain; 5pm Songs of Praise style service featuring Kidz and Co village choir. Distington Community School hall, Sunday: 11am Rick Welsby folk singing, 2-3pm Sethera brass band.
