Two thousand plastic ducks raced down the River Cocker at the weekend, watched by crowds of supporters.

Cockermouth Round Table organised the event which raised £1,500 for the Girlguiding Derwent Division.

The ducks were dropped from the cycleway bridge over Rubbybanks Road and caught at the footbridge downstream.

New for this year was a giant inflatable tube which was loaned by the Environment Agency and used to catch the ducks. Last year more than 100 ducks escaped and headed on towards the Derwent, this year only three slipped the nets.

The event was organised by Mike Edmondson, who resurrected the event last year.

It used to be held in Memorial Gardens but did not take place after the 2009 floods.

Round Table member Tim Fox said: "It went really well, lots of people came to watch. The flooding barrier was a big success, we normally lose far more ducks.

"We also trialled 30 larger ducks which were painted different colours. We are hoping in the future that businesses will sponsor them."
