People in Cockermouth affected by December's flood are being invited to an event to celebrate the town's recovery so far.

King's Church will host the free event at the Deer Orchard football pitch on July 9 from 1pm to 5pm.

It is intended to thank those who helped in any way with the flood rescue and recovery efforts, and say "It looks like we've made it" with those affected.

Refreshments will be provided.

Town and borough councillors Alan and Christine Smith are set to attend.

Churches Together in Cockermouth is this week calling time on the Bridge Cafe, which it has run in Wakefield Road car park since December 20.

Seven months on, the group has decided the time has come to change its focus.

The cafe closes today.

From next week, King's Church will run coffee mornings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10am to 1pm, in the downstairs flat at 2 Gote Road.

Paul Mogford, the church's operations director, said: "Although the cafe is coming to an end we still recognise the need people have because they are still trying to find their feet and there's a need for ongoing support.

"Closing the cafe gives us a transition point to say thank you to those who have helped and mark the recovery so far with those affected by the floods, which the event on July 9 aims to do."

King's Church, Rotary and Churches Together in Cockermouth are also sponsoring welcome packs for flood victims returning to their homes.

People can sign up for one by visiting the King's Church drop ins, calling the church on 01900 821100 or emailing admin@kingscc.org
