Residents of Cockermouth’s Bridge End Court will get extra protection to keep their homes dry in future floods.

Home Group is installing 75cm-high flood barriers on the front doors and patio doors of the ground-floor flats, with extra protection for communal doors and lift access, with government funding.

Lisa Russell, of Home Group, said: “Even if just a small amount of water enters a property it can have a long-lasting and stressful impact on our customers. We can’t stop floods from happening but we can ensure that we give customers the best protection possible.”

Non-return valves will also be fitted to waste pipes to prevent sewage being pushed back into homes.

A flood barrier system has also been installed on the communal entrances to flats at Derwent Mill, and non-return valves will be installed at St Leonard’s Close.
