A farmer was so inspired by the work of the Cockermouth-based Foodbank that he decided to raise money for it by doing the Great Cumbrian Run on Sunday.

John Brough, from Bolton Low Houses, raised £326 for North Lakes Foodbank, which he did not know existed until he was talking to Cockermouth vet Andrew Robinson. Andrew is the voluntary director of the foodbank.

"Andrew was coming to see a cow on the farm last Christmas and he was talking about the foodbank and how busy it was, especially at that time of year," said John, a dairy farmer.

"I didn't know that it was running in this area and that there were so many people in need. So many people overindulge at Christmas but clearly there are many others struggling.

"As a food producer it really struck a chord and I wanted to do what I could."

Andrew said: "It is always fantastic when people fundraise for the Foodbank.

"We are constantly needing food and financial donations to keep feeding those in need in our local community.

"We have had a very busy summer feeding children through our Lunchpacks 4 Kids scheme and so are delighted that this type of support will help us replenish our food stocks.

"Harvest time is here now which is a great time when churches and schools support the Foodbank by collecting food."
