Pirates, facepainting and free fish and chips will all help celebrate the revival of Maryport’s famous old lighthouse.

A day of fun for all the family is to be held to mark the renovation of the landmark.

The event is due to be staged on August 13 and will include facepainting, live music and a fish and chips giveaway.

A lookalike of Pirates of the Caribbean hero Jack Sparrow will be on hand to star in photoshoots and selfies

And the lighthouse will also be open for visitors to step back in time and go inside.

Toni Magean, town centre manager for Allerdale Council, said: “We have already had the official unveiling of the repaired lighthouse, but we also wanted to have a celebration in its honour.

“We will also open up the lighthouse so people can go inside it.”

One of the world’s oldest cast iron lighthouses, it is believed it was built either in 1786 or 1846. It has been immortalised in paintings by LS Lowry and Percy Kelly.

The transformed lighthouse was unveiled last month after £50,000-worth of renovation work had been completed.

It now shines again – though only onto land – corroded steel panels have been replaced with new cast-iron sheeting, lights have been placed around its column and a new interpretation board have been erected.

The celebration event is being staged on August 13 from 2pm until 7pm.
