Hundreds of children from a Cockermouth school enjoyed a grand day out on the fells.

All of the pupils from Year 1 to 6 took part in the adventure organised by Fairfield Primary School teacher Dave Edwards.

The 286 pupils, accompanied by staff, took buses to St John's in the Vale, near Keswick, and headed up High Rigg, each of them carrying a picnic lunch.

The group was split in two, with the older children doing a longer walk with a stiff climb up the north-facing slopes. Both groups met for lunch and a rendition of The Grand Old Duke of York.

Mr Edwards, who is also the Forest School lead, said: "The weather was kind and the children were welcomed home despite being damp around the edges and quite muddy. Parents have been extremely supportive of the venture.

"From Early Years all the way through school, teachers are promoting the benefits of learning outside. We run Forest School sessions once a week and have residentials from Year 2 to Year 6. Taking the school out for the day is an obvious extension of this.”

Newly appointed headteacher Chris Steele said: "It was a great success and the children had a fantastic day.”
