People across Allerdale are being encouraged to get on their bikes as part of a new scheme.

Cumbria County Council, Active Cumbria, See More Cumbria, The National Trust and local councils have joined forces with British Cycling and Sky to put on several Sky Ride Local ride events.

Cyclists can sign up for a 13-mile ride from Keswick's Theatre By The Lake to Force Crag Mine, near Braithwaite.

The Force Crag Mine ride will take place on Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, June 12.

Children aged eight and above can take part, but anyone aged eight to 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

A 10-mile ride from The Wave Centre in Maryport to Allonby will take place on Sunday, July 31.

Cyclists of all ages can take part and the ride is suitable for child trailers.

Colin Cox, Cumbria County Council’s public health director, said: "Cycling is a great way to get back into shape, whether your doing it for fun or fitness, cycling is easier on your joints and a good activity that helps sharpen the mind too. 

"It’s an easy way to be active, healthy and get some exercise."
