Girl Guides units from Cockermouth and the surrounding area are raising money for Cumbria Community Foundation’s Flood Appeal.

1st Brigham Rainbows have organised the fund-raising challenge on Saturday February 13.

The walk will follow the affected Cocker and Derwent river courses and crisscross over eight foot and road bridges which were all affected by the flooding last month.

Around 240 girls from the 16 units within Rainbows, Brownies, Guide and senior sections have been invited to take part with their families.

The girls will pay to take part in the event, receiving a stamp at each bridge they go over.

Collecting all eight stamps will see them awarded a badge which has been especially made for the flood fund-raiser.

Unit leaders, assistant leaders and volunteers from the Soroptomists will be manning the bridges along the route for safety.

The Cumbria Flood Appeal was set up by Cumbria Community Foundation to help those affected.

Andy Beeforth, foundation chief executive, said: "A huge thank you to all the girls, parents and volunteers who are raising funds.

"We supported 1st Brigham Brownies following the floods in 2009 so it’s great to see them giving back to their community."
