AN INQUEST has been opened into the death of a man at a Silloth caravan park.

The death of Robert William Gordon, 47, on March 13 following a disturbance at the Stanwix Park Holiday Centre, triggered the arrest of a man, also aged 47, who Cumbria Police have released on bail.

He is due to answer bail at Workington Police Station on April 20. He was arrested in connection with the death.

The office of Cumbria's senior coroner, David Roberts, has confirmed that an inquest was opened into the tragedy, with paperwork showing that Mr Gordon, from Annan Court, Kilnmarnock, was identified by his daughter Shereen Gordon.

The inquest has been adjourned until August 17.

Meanwhile, Cumbria Police has issued an update on what happened to three other men who were arrested as a result of a disturbance at the Holiday Park on March 12, the night Mr Gordon was injured.

One of those men has been bailed until April 21, while the other are said to be helping police with their enquiries.

After Mr Gordon's death, police issued an urgent appeal for information.

Senior officers said he had sustained serious injuries during an assault, which occurred between 1.45am and 2.45am on Saturday, March 12 at the holiday centre.

He was taken to Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary in a critical condition. He died the following day.

Cumbrian officers were said to be supporting Mr Gordon's family.

Temporary Detective Superintendent Mike Brown, who was leading the investigation, said officers conducted inquiries with residents and visitors at Stanwix Park as part of their investigation.

He issued an appeal for information from anyone who may have witnessed an incident which started in the bar area of Stanwix Park and then continued outside.

Anyone with any information about the altercation is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 .
