New investors have come forward to secure the future of Workington Town – and the club has also seen an influx of new directors.

Despite Town’s relegation from the Kingstone Press Championship being confirmed after their devastating loss at Sheffield last weekend, vice chairman Mark Fryer insists things are on the up.

He was delighted that new backers had stepped forward, although they do not wish to be named.

He said: “At the end of the day this has helped secure the future of the club so it is absolutely fantastic.

“A few people over the years have always said if they can help in any way then they would.

“And in our time of need they have come forward and helped us out. They have the best interests of the club at heart.”

Three new directors have joined the board with a host of enthusiasm and new ideas to help take the club forward. Former coach Les Ashe will join Les Smallwood and John Walker, of Maryport Bodywork Centre in the boardroom.

And Fryer hopes that there are one or two more in the pipeline.

“These lads have a lot of enthusiasm about what they can bring to the club and they are very keen to get under way,” said Fryer.

“They have all come forward with a view to helping the club move on and rebuild next season. They all love the club.

“It was difficult when the board had dwindled down to just two or three members to get all the jobs done ready for game day so this is a huge weight off people’s shoulders.”

But before the club can look to the future they have to complete this season, starting with Sunday’s final home game against Bradford Bulls, ko 3pm.

“It’s going to be tough this weekend against Bradford, especially with all the injuries we have but we don’t give up and put our heads down at Workington and we will fight on,” added Fryer.

Coach Phil Veivers may only have 14 fit players for the clash, with doubts over Matt Gee and Marc Shackley, who both picked up further knocks last weekend.
