Everyone is gearing up for carnival time in Great and Little Broughton.

Tomorrow will be the 70th continuous year of Broughton Carnival. Everyone is welcome to join the parade which sets off from the field on Moor Road at 2pm.

It will head through Great and Little Broughton to the Welfare Field where the crowning ceremony will take place at about 4pm. There will be lots of entertainment on the field, including a fair.

All children under 16 in the procession will receive a rosette and a voucher for refreshments. They will also be given a badge to commemorate 70 continuous years of Broughton Children’s Carnival.

Fletchers Fair and other attractions will be on the Welfare Field.

Secretary Anne Davis said: "We've got all the queens, each will have a float or trailer, and four bands. The school, pubs and groups will also be involved which always makes for a great atmosphere."

Tyneside Pipe Band will be taking part, along with brass bands from Workington, North Allerton and Mossley.

"This year we have an extra brass band – Mossley Band which has kindly been sponsored by Dobies of Workington," said Anne.

Duncan Byers, who is originally from Broughton, leads the band. He featured in the film Brassed Off.

The carnival costs about £4,000 to stage. The money is raised throughout the year with quizzes, a race night and donations. A new fundraising method involved asking people to fill jars with coins, which raised £450.

This will be the 40th carnival for chairman John Dobie.

"We couldn't do it without the committee,"said John.

"Anne and my sister Christine both joined in 1999 and have done a wonderful job over the years, as do all the other members."
