The Voice star Jolan is among the attractions at Maryport’s first Gala Day this weekend.

The event is taking place instead of the town carnival which has now been scrapped.

A small group of volunteers decided to hold a huge family gala day instead.

Organisers have been able to arrange the new event for the town thanks to funding from Allerdale council and Maryport Town Council.

The gala day is being held on the marina green on Saturday, July 9.

Stalls, a bouncy castle, a funfair, birds of prey and a performance from singer and musician Jolan Gidney-Craigen, from Moor Row, who came second in the national television competition, are all on offer.

Flimby Brass Band and Workington Town Band will also perform on the day.

Thomas Todd, event secretary, said: “There was disappointment that the carnival had gone so it’s nice to bring it back in some way.

“Bring everybody you can as it’s going to be fantastic.”

The gala day will run between noon and 5pm.

The event committee is made up of Lee Williamson, Thomas Todd, Billy Pegram, Linda Radcliffe, Sam Barcock and Round Table members Mark Dawson Nick Hayton.

The event has been sponsored by Allerdale council, Maryport council and Round Table.
