A Cockermouth viewpoint will be transformed thanks to various groups working together.

The land where the Rivers Cocker and Derwent meet, beneath Cockermouth Castle, is a tranquil spot with views across to Memorial Gardens and up and down the rivers.

However, ageing benches and the lack of a path mean it is not so easy to access.

All that is about to change thanks to a partnership between housing developer Lovell, Allerdale council, Cockermouth Town Council, Jennings Brewery and Cockermouth Civic Trust.

A landscaping project, which starts on Monday, will include improvements to seating and repair of the boundary wall.

A York stone wheelchair-accessible path will be created, over 2,000 daffodils planted and a heritage-style street light installed.

Contractor Ashcroft has been appointed to carry out the work.

Lovell is providing £13,000 towards the £16,000 costs of the project, with £3,000 coming from Allerdale council’s town centre funding that has been allocated to the scheme with the town council.

Lovell has built new homes in Cockermouth and the team was keen to get involved in a legacy project which would benefit those who live and work in the town, as well as its visitors.

Jennings Brewery owns most of the area which is being improved by the project and is part of the steering group.

Councillor Alan Smith, leader of Allerdale council and a town councillor, said: "I think this is one of the most important sites in town – it is the mouth of the Cocker from where the town takes its name – so I am looking forward the work beginning and the area being transformed into a place where visitors and residents will enjoy spending their time."

Joe Broomfield, town centre area manager and chairman of the steering group, added: "Hopefully the works won’t take too long to complete, but we’re aware that access to High Sand Lane is severely restricted at this time, so at no point will the pedestrian bridge across the River Cocker to Brewery Lane be closed.

"I would ask that drivers don’t park at the bottom of Brewery Lane whilst the works are on-going to give Ashcroft space to work."
