Maryport's lighthouse could be shining on the town by the end of September.

Allerdale council building surveyor Trevor Hurst told Love Maryport that work on renovating the lighthouse was likely to begin in September and would take about two weeks to complete.

The town received a £50,000 grant from the Government’s Coastal Communities Revival Fund to restore the cast iron lighthouse which is thought to be one of a few of its kind left in the world.

Mr Hurst said a rusted panel would have to be replaced and the lighthouse would be painted in the same paint used by boats.

He said: “One of the biggest tasks will be getting the scaffolding up. Because it is so close to the sea we have to take special precautions.”

Mr Hurst said he hoped, by the end of September, the light would be shining at least into the town where it would be seen by residents and visitors.

Town centre manager Toni Magean said the next stage would be to create an interpretation board with the history of the lighthouse.
