Cockermouth's thriving University of the Third Age (U3A) will be holding an open day next week to show people what is on offer.

It runs about 40 groups, ranging from ballroom dancing and bridge to Scrabble and walking.

The open day will be held at Christ Church, on Gallowbarrow, from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, October 14.

Various groups will be showing what they offer, there will also be an exhibition of past events.

Performing on the day will be Alte Musik and the Latin American dancers, as well as the singing, drama and ukelele groups.

The U3A's Fit 'n' Active Theatre Company recently toured with their latest production and raised £1,100 which was split between Hospice at Home West Cumbria and Macmillan Cancer Support.

The group was set up in January last year and meets weekly. It toured Selfies, a selection of humorous sketches and short plays which members had written, earlier this year, and raised £1,100. The group then went on to create Selfies II.
