MEP Julie Ward visited Workington's Helena Thompson Museum this week.
She said: "The European Union is very interested in heritage and innovation and how we can bring these two together.
"The museum uses new technologies to interpret the past and this makes it relevant and exciting to different audiences.
"It's important that this is happening at a local level because Europe might be a union of many countries, but each have their own identity."
