Workington MP Sue Hayman stood up for farmers and fishermen in West Cumbria during a debate in London.

The debate say MPs discuss the effect Britain leaving the EU would have on agriculture and fishing in south west England.

But Mrs Hayman argued that Brexit would also affect West Cumbrian farmers and fishermen.

During the debate, she asked Environment Minister Dr Therese Coffey how the Government planned to replace EU funds and what she would say to reassure farmers and fishermen.

Mrs Hayman said: "I regularly meet farmers from across my constituency. They are concerned about their livelihoods and how much support they will receive in the future.

"There may well be new opportunities, as has been mentioned, but it is also clear that there are substantial challenges ahead.

"The implications of Brexit for our fishing industry are highly uncertain.

"We see significant uncertainty at a time when fishermen and farmers really need the reassurance of continued vital investment in the rural communities of which they are such an important part."

Mrs Hayman also asked the minister if common fisheries policy regulations would be retained and asked her for a progress report on cutting red tape for farmers after Britain leaves the EU.

She added: "We see significant uncertainty at a time when fishermen and farmers really need the reassurance of continued vital investment in the rural communities of which they are such an important part.

"We also need infrastructure investment for better transport, better phone signals and better broadband."

Mrs Hayman has requested a written response to the questions.
