A Workington man arrested following a fatal crash on Saturday has been released on bail.

One woman died and another remains in a critical condition following the incident on the outskirts of the town.

The women, aged 35 and 79, were on foot when they were struck by a Volkswagen Passat car on the busy A596 road.

The 79-year-old was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle where she died.

The younger woman was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Police have confirmed that she remains in a serious, critical condition.

Their identities have not yet been released however their families have been informed.

The collision happened close to the Dunmail Park Shopping Centre, Workington, at about 7.20pm.

Police closed the A596 both ways between Ellenborough Road in Maryport and Northside roundabout in Workington for forensic investigation work to take place.

The road reopened at 3.25am. Drivers were advised to avoid the area. Diversions were in place from Maryport and Northside.

The car driver, a 46-year-old man from Workington, was arrested last night.

A police spokesman said he has now been released on bail while further inquiries are carried out.

The nearby Asda store, at Dunmail Park, remained open throughout but it is understood that staff changing shifts had to be escorted to and from their workplace by managers to avoid the accident scene.

Anyone with information about the collision should call police on 101.
