Reduced opening hours at Maryport Library is only temporary, the county council says.
The library has been closed on Saturday mornings, when it usually opens between 9.30am and noon.
There have also been rumours in the town that there will be a further reduction and that job losses might occur.
However, a county spokesman said there has been no changes to the opening hours at Maryport Library.
"There have been some ad hoc temporary closures recently as a result of staff shortages.
"We publicise these closures on posters in the library, giving library users as much notice as possible."
